Kase Revolution Magnetic Circular Filters - The Best Filters For Landscape Photography?

As a professional landscape and nature photographer, I am always on the lookout for new and innovative products that can help make me more efficient out in the field. For the last 3 years, I’ve ditched the graduated filters and clumsy holders, and have solely been using the Kase Wolverine Magnetic filters, and I must say, there is no going back…

The Kase Wolverine Magnetic filters have been a game-changer in the world of photography. These filters are world-renowned for being made of high-quality optical glass and are designed to provide exceptional image quality and excellent colour control.

What sets them apart from other filters in the market is their magnetic attachment system. The filters attach to the lens using a magnetic ring, which eliminates the need for a filter holder. This makes it easier and quicker to attach and detach filters, especially when you are shooting in challenging conditions - which face it, when aren’t we as landscape photographers?

*disclaimer, before going any further it’s only fair to say that since 2019, I have been an Ambassador for Kase Filters. So, take this review as you will, but for those who know me, you know I only use and champion equipment I truly believe in. I have not been paid by Kase to write this review, it’s solely been done to help aid those looking for the best filters for landscape photography.

are they the best filters for landscape photography?

One of the most significant advantages of the Kase Wolverine Magnetic filters is their durability. These filters are made of toughened glass, which makes them scratch-resistant and shatterproof (trust me, I’ve thrown several filters into rivers and puddles to prove this to clients on workshops).

They are also waterproof and oil-resistant, due to a hydrophobic coating, which means you can use them in any weather condition without worrying about damaging them. After all, the whole purpose of filters is to enhance your photography experience, and not hinder the results… so the more this becomes habit and ease of use, the better your photography will become, as you can focus more on composition, light, focus etc. etc.

Another great feature of the magnetic filters is their colour accuracy. The Kase Wolverine Magnetic filters are designed to provide accurate color reproduction, which means you can capture images with true-to-life colors. This is particularly important for us landscape photographers who want to capture the beauty of nature in its true colours - no nasty purple or blue tints here (not looking at any particular filters I’ve used in the past, but they rhyme with fig whopper).

NEW Kase Revolution Magnetic Circular Filters

In 2023 we were SUPER excited to finally get the launch of the eagerly anticipated Revolution refresh of the popular Wolverine Magnetic filters, giving us the same glass with a refined design, featuring coloured rings on the outside to make distinguishing the difference between filters SO much easier in the field - this was something us Ambassadors and the team at Kase were working on for a very long time so it’s been great to see them launch with such a popular reception.

Kase Revolution Magnetic Circular Filters

The Kase Revolution Magnetic filters are available in a range of sizes, with the most popular being 77mm and 82mm, although for the highest chance of mitigating ANY vignetting when stacking 2-3 filters, I personally champion the 95mm magnetics, which means they can fit most if not all lenses (Nikon Z 14-24mm users don’t worry, they also have a dedicated 112mm set for you but be prepared to pay big £££).

What I would highly recommend is getting the largest kit you can afford, and then getting magnetic adapter rings for each of your lenses. For example, I have the following lenses and kit:

  • Canon RF15-35mm F2.8 = 82mm (so I use the 82-95mm Magnetic Circular Step Up Ring)

  • Canon RF24-105mm F4 = 77mm (so I use the 77-95mm Magnetic Circular Step Up Ring)

  • Canon RF100-400mm F4.5-5.6 = 77mm (so I use the 77-95mm Magnetic Circular Step Up Ring)

This may seem expensive at the time, but when you think you’ll only ever need to buy ONE set of filters that will work on ALL of your lenses, it makes a lot of sense in the long run.

Each size is split into two kits, or sets, Entry and Pro - with the former consisting of 3 colour coded filters: ND8 (3 stop), ND64 (6 stop), Polariser, Magnetic Adaptor, Inlaid Ring and Carry Pouch, plus a magnetic Lens Cap. The latter is the kit I would recommend for those looking to do more long exposures in the middle of the day, as it comes with everything in the Entry kit PLUS an ND1000 (10 stop to us humans). This gives us landscape photographers the flexibility to choose the right filter for our specific needs in whatever lighting situations.
