Datacolor SpyderX Capture Pro - Colour Management & Calibration for Landscape Photography

When it comes to colour management and calibrating monitors, I’ve used and trusted Datacolor’s calibrators since the very start of my landscape photography journey - beginning with the Spyder5 Pro and now with the SpyderX Elite.

How many of you calibrate your screen/monitors on a regular basis? Have you invested in a high-quality 4K IPS panel with 99% AdobeRGB coverage but still feel your images aren’t consistent across devices? Well, one of the most common reasons for this (yes, even you Mac users) is because your monitor will for certain be WAY too bright and more than likely have a colour cast. So, how do you fix this? Well, it’s pretty simple as long as you invest in a calibration tool such as the SpyderX Pro or SpyderX Elite from Datacolor.

Colour Management

At the beginning of each month, I always re-calibrate my BenQ SW271C monitor to ensure that I can process accurately for both web and print. This is especially important during the Spring/Summer transition when the greens are incredible strong!

I’ve recently collaborated with the team at Datacolor who’s Spyder series calibrators I’ve used since the very start of my landscape photography journey. My post-processing workflow ALWAYS begins by checking my monitor is properly calibrated using the SpyderX Elite, then I boot up Lightroom and start working on my RAW files by correcting the exposure, adjusting the white balance and making local adjustments.

Then, when it comes to printing, I know with absolute confidence that with the correct paper profiles (thanks Fotospeed) the final photograph will come out almost identical to what I see on my monitor (minor exposure tweaks and shadow recovery needed depending on paper type of course).

*a big thank you to the team at Datacolor for sending me the SpyderX Capture Pro kit to share with you. This is by no means a paid ad, it’s simply sharing their latest and newest kit which I myself have used and invested in religiously over the years. Over the coming months I will be using the Spyder Cube and Spyder Checkr in the field to see how they perform capturing accurate colours in the field of landscape photography.
